Bed bugs: smells that tell you if you have an infestation – and how to get rid of them

Bed bugs are the stuff of nightmares and infestation on these small creatures could be a major concern. With the lockdown for most Britons, bed bug infestation is the last problem everyone wants to deal with. Fortunately, Rentokil’s Paul Blackhurst spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk to offer his insights, tips, and the biggest smells to warn of bed bug infestation.

Despite their name, bed bugs will happily exist outside of the bedroom, as Paul Blackhurst explains.

“They can travel on people and survive traveling in our luggage, as well as on sofas and most of the upholstery,” he said.

“The parasites are most common in the bedroom because they are nocturnal and are attracted to the warmth and carbon dioxide that sleeping people produce.

“But the truth is, they can thrive in almost any crack and crevice, waiting their time to emerge at night to feed.”

“You can also perceive an unpleasant, sweet, sickly smell in the affected area.

“Bed bugs also give off a hormonal odor when disturbed.”

How to get rid of

Many bugs are repelled by certain smells like peppermint, tea tree oil, and lavender, Pointe Pest Control said.

The website continued, “So it makes sense that certain smells repel bed bugs as well.

“While bed bugs try to avoid certain smells, there is a lot of misinformation out there about what those smells are.

“A well-known scent that wards off bed bugs is the pheromones secreted by the nymphs or baby bed bugs.

“These are supposed to keep male bed bugs away from the nymphs so they don’t try to mate with them.

“However, these pheromones only work on male bed bugs and will not prevent females from entering a room.

“However, it is still sold in many products in the market today.

“While these products could be better than nothing using them, they likely won’t completely eliminate the problem.”
