Chicago still has the worst rat problem, an Orkin poll shows

In fact, the survey shows that the top 5 cities for rodent problems are the same as in last year’s survey. Los Angles came in second on the list, followed by New York, Washington, and San Francisco.

Orkin ranked U.S. metro regions based on the number of new rodent treatments performed from September 15, 2020 to September 15, 2021. The ranking includes both private and commercial treatments.

Doesn’t have the problem anymore

Orkin seems to have had good experience handling rats. Analysis of ConsumerAffairs reviews found that rats are a major problem for many homeowners. Margaret from San Francisco tells us that Orkin got rid of her rat problems.

“I haven’t had rats, mice, or ants since they started,” Margaret wrote in a ConsumerAffairs review. “My house is clean, as is my garage, but still these pests found their way and were difficult to get rid of.”

Scott of Bothell, Washington, also had nice things to say about the orkin staff who performed pest control services on his home.

“I opened an account with Orkin in 2016 because I had a problem with rats or mice in my crawling room in my house,” Scott said in his ConsumerAffairs review. “So they came out and handled all of these issues very well.”

Orkin said the past 12 months had been challenging for rodent control as rats and mice became more aggressive. As restaurants had to close at the beginning of the pandemic, rodents were forced to find new sources of food. The dumpsters where they usually got their meals were empty.

“When people resume normal activities, the availability of food will increase,” said Ben Hottel, an orkin entomologist. “Rodents are experts at sniffing out food and shelter, and they are resilient in their way of maintaining both. After a year of depleted resources, residential real estate is the ideal habitat for rodents, and once they settle in, they can to reproduce quickly and in large quantities. ”

What should I do

There are several things homeowners can do to keep mice and rats at bay. Keep food sealed inside in metal or plastic containers, and remove spilled food from the kitchen as soon as it occurs.

Outside, you keep the landscaping under control. Tall grass with adequate housing, such as piles of wood next to the house, can be ideal habitats for rodents.

Periodically inspect the exterior of your home to look for possible access points. Seal any cracks or holes if you find them.
