“Now that spring has arrived, we often see spikes in not only temperatures but also pest-related activity, especially termites,” said Joe Magyar, Terminix regional training manager. “It is important for homeowners who live in areas with humid and humid weather conditions to be aware of early warning signs for termites before damage becomes significant.”

Depending on the species, termite warning signs can be:

  • Blisters in wooden floors that look like small cracks or holes

  • Hollowed out or damaged wood

  • Detection of the pests themselves, such as discarded wings

  • Feces that look like sawdust or coffee grounds

  • Mud pipes that look like pencil-sized dirt tunnels near the base of the house

Early detection and professional termite control can help ensure that a small termite problem doesn’t turn into an expensive ordeal.

Terminix recommends homeowners have their homes inspected at least once a year and call a professional if there is any sign of infestation. Homeowners can also take a few simple steps to reduce their risk of termite infestation, including:

  • Trimming shrubbery near houses to allow air to circulate around damp areas

  • Use of products such as synthetic mulch or pea gravel in landscaping, especially near the building foundation

  • Proper outdoor care to prevent water from leaking onto wood paneling and windows

  • Make sure crawl spaces are properly ventilated to minimize moisture around floor joists and subfloors
