Deer Tick and Delta Spirit work together in New York

Deer Tick and Delta Spirit finished their Friend Ship tour at New York’s Webster Hall on Tuesday night. During the evening’s encore, the two groups joined forces on a series of songs they often have: Cheap Tricks “Surrender,” the self-titled song by Middle Brother, Deer Ticks “Ashamed,” and the traditional “La Bamba,” that Deer Tick was inspired to after hearing Los Lobos’ opinion of the selection. Delta Spirit’s Matt Vasquez also sat on the set of Deer Tick on Middle Brothers Daydreaming. (Middle Brother is an indie folk supergroup starring Vasquez, John J. McCauley of Deer Tick, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes.)

A few other guest appearances line Deer Tick’s final setlists. During both her Monday and Tuesday stops at Webster Hall, Robert Ellis played keyboards on Deer Tick throughout the show. The Tallest Man on Earth also appeared on Monday for a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You,” a fitting selection since the show took place during the recent New York run of the Bard.
