Large flea infestation closes 2 schools in Oakland for cleaning | National

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Officials said Wednesday that two Oakland elementary schools will be closed for the remainder of the week due to a flea infestation possibly caused by raccoons. The Oakland Unified School District described the infestation at Esperanza Elementary School and Korematsu Discovery Academy as “a major problem”. The schools are next to each other. Exterminators have been working to get rid of the fleas since mid-September, but the problem persists and the two-day closure starting Thursday will prevent fleas from spreading across campus, the district said in a statement. The schools are located near a wooded area and have identified issues with raccoons that experts believe may have caused the flea problem.
