Local residents frustrated with “rat infestation” in apartment complex in north Houston

HOUSTON – Residents of the Bayou Oaks Apartments in northern Houston claim rats have entered their apartment complex and management is doing nothing to get rid of the rodents.

“You can hear them walking through the walls,” said resident Natisha Tippit.

Tippit bought a camera to capture the rats in her home and said she had notified the landlord of the apartment complex.

“We have just passed through two leasing managers. I informed the first one and she told me if I got a cat she wouldn’t charge me a pet deposit. And this one just lied, she didn’t do anything, ”said Tippit.

Tippit isn’t the only one with the problem. Several other residents told KPRC 2 that they had the same problem but refused to appear on camera for fear of retaliation

“I have bronchitis and my three children have really bad asthma and the feces get bad where we have to go to the hospital,” said Tippit.

Tippit wants to get out of her lease, but said the landlord had told her that she had to give a 60-day notice period.

KPRC 2 tried to speak to the leasing manager on Wednesday but was told, “I’m not involved.” The leasing manager then closed the door for us.

We tried to call back on Thursday afternoon but our calls were ignored and not answered.

If you or someone you know has a rat infestation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have a few tips:

  • Cap the holes to prevent entry.

  • Setting traps.

  • Clean up to avoid diseases that could occur from rodent infested areas.
