Philadelphia residents ask how to get rid of rats as the rat infestation becomes a “disaster.”

PHILADELPHIA – Some Philadelphians have raised concerns that their neighborhoods continue to be rife with rats.

Local residents said the rats live on vacant land that is not looked after by the owner.

There is a barbershop from Deejay Da Singa right next to the property. He said the rodents burrow into the ground and under nearby buildings.

“That is their lot at night. At the moment we are in their field. It is more than a problem. … It is like a disaster,” said Da Singa.

He said the city had received complaints but not much had been done about the problem.

The rats even find their way into the surrounding houses.

Neighbor Nydra Skinner said, “It jumped on my couch and fell on the floor and had claws.”

With the cold months approaching, neighbors fear that the rats will only get more desperate.

“How do we get people in safely when rats go into the suspended ceilings?” asked Da Singa.

A Philadelphia Department of Public Health spokesman said officials were in the neighborhood to investigate the rat problem and are currently working to get into the property legally.

It is still unclear when the problem will be resolved.
