“We understand the devastating impact termites can have on communities,” said Matthew Stevenson, president of Terminix Residential. “With warm spring weather around the corner, those who live in areas with humid and humid conditions are more susceptible to termite exposure and should watch out for early warning signs of infestation.”

Termite warning signs vary by type of termite and can include:

  • Termites emerging from walls or posts

  • Blisters in wooden floors that look like small cracks or holes

  • Hollowed out or damaged wood

  • Detection of the pests themselves, such as discarded wings

  • Feces that look like sawdust or coffee grounds

  • Mud pipes that look like pencil-sized dirt tunnels near the base of the house

Early detection and licensed, professional termite control can help ensure that a small termite problem doesn’t turn into an expensive test.

Terminix recommends homeowners have their homes inspected at least once a year. In addition to scheduling a free termite inspection with Terminix, homeowners can take simple steps to reduce their risk of termite infestation, including:

  • Store all firewood outside the home on raised, non-wooden platforms.

  • Make sure that four inches of the foundation are visible and that no mulch is touching the house. The siding should not reach the ground.

  • Make sure bushes or landscaping are at least two feet from the edge of the house.

  • Keep drainage systems clear and away from the house to prevent water build-up.

  • Eliminate any water leaks or moisture buildup from the house.
