Victoria ranks third among the “worst cities” in BC according to pest control company

A recent report from a Canadian pest control company said there may be a rat nest in some island cities.

Orkin Canada recently released its Top 20 “rattest” cities in British Columbia, and Victoria happens to be third, behind Burnaby second and Vancouver first.

The ranking is based on how many rodent treatments (rats and mice) Orkin responded to in each city from August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021, the company said. They say it includes both personal and commercial treatments.

According to Orkin, this isn’t the first time Victoria has cracked the top three. Victoria has been the province’s second most popular city as of 2017 and has dropped to third this year.

Orkin says the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted rodents due to depletion of resources like food and less human activity. They say this has resulted in them moving more freely and being more courageous to get food.

Closing holes in foundations, pruning trees and shrubs, eliminating sources of moisture, and testing for rodents are things Orkin says residents can do to prevent rodent problems.
